Racun ketela yang selama ini telah kita kenal baik adalah sianida, yang bila mengkonsumsi pada jumlah besar akan mengakibatkan kepala pening-pening, mual, perut terasa perih, badan gemetar, bahkan pingsan. Indonesia tercatat menjadi salah satu negara produsen ubi kayu atau singkong di dunia. Namun Indonesia juga tercatat menjadi salah satu yang masih rajin mengimpor tepung tapioka yang merupakan produk olahan ubi kayu.

Menurut Benny Kusbini, praktisi pertanian yang kini Ketua Dewan Kedelai, memang agak aneh jika Indonesia mengimpor tepung tapioka apalagi gaplek singkong yang relatif banyak di Indonesia.

Berdasarkan data Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), meski relatif kecil, Indonesia masih mengimpor ubi kayu dengan total 4,73 ton dengan nilai US$ 21,9 ribu dari Januari hingga Juni 2011. Negara Italia merupakan negara sumber impor ubi kayu dengan nilai terbesar yaitu US$ 20,64 ribu dengan berat 1,78 ton. Sedangkan Cina merupakan negara penyuplai ubi kayu terbesar di dunia hanya berkontribusi yaitu 2,96 ton dengan nilai US$ 1.273 (more…)
